What does that noise in your Ford suspension mean?

In July of 2021, Ford announced a recall affecting 675,000 Ford Explorers made from 2013 to 2017. Ford said the problem is a seized cross-axis ball joint, which could cause a fractured rear suspension toe link and potential reduction of steering control. Drivers could notice "a clunk noise, unusual handling, or a misaligned rear wheel" as well as reduction of steering control, which could lead to a crash.

Ball joints play a crucial part of the suspension components on almost all modern vehicles. They are round (hence the name "ball") bearings in a socket and function just like the ball and socket of a human hip. They are one of the main pivot points connecting the control arms of the vehicle to the steering knuckle. The ball joints in the front allow the front wheels and suspension to move back and forth as well as up and down when the vehicle is responding to surface changes on the road. However, when the ball joints begin to go bad, they will tell you in subtle ways that it is time to replace them.

Common symptoms of a failing ball joint are: a hard creaking sound from the front of the vehicle, steering wander, vibration from the front of the vehicle and/or uneven tire wear. This is not uncommon in Ford F-150/F-250/F-350 trucks made between 2015 and 2019.

We can replace worn out ball joints on your Ford truck with quality parts that will restore it to like-new performance an give you years of service!
